Book Discussion
We sometimes struggle to connect better with our partners. At times, our parenting skills are put to the test as we try to get across to our children. Yet, we all crave healthy and loving relationships. For those of us who like to read, excellent resources that teaches us to identify our partner’s / child’s love language so that we can forge a deeper connection and have a more meaningful and healthy relationship are the two books by Gary Chapman, ‘The 5 love languages’ and ‘The 5 love languages of children’. On the 14th of March’22, we got together at THE SPACE, Jalandhar to explore how communicating in a particular love language can make our loved ones feel cherished and adored. Through music and games, we tried to discover our own love language too. These books were used as prompts to get us thinking about our relationships from a different perspective as they offer very practical tips for better communication with everyone we interact with. In order to encourage our local book store, the copies of the books were ordered at Readers’ Paradise in Model Town.

Sankofa with Venus Viswambharan
Phulkari WOJ invited its members to an online event, ‘Sankofa’ with Ms. Venus Viswambharan on Saturday, 12th February’22. ‘Sankofa’ was designed to bring out the little subconscious reasons we choose to evade self love and it offered some simple and critical strategies to practice self- care through the day. February was the prefect month and year to draw attention to ourselves, to put the spotlight on ourselves, to find and then let out our hidden voice, to uncover our true personalities and bring these forth in confidence. Venus is a Fitness enthusiast, a certified instructor from the Prestigious Yoga institute and i a certified Yoga Protocol instructor from Ministry of Ayush. She is the cofounder of Yoga Path – an online platform to spread awareness about yoga. She has been a motivational trainer and It is her passion to reach out and share her learning and experiences to help uplift people. Sankofa (pronounced SAHN-koh-fah) is a word in the Twi language of Ghana meaning “to retrieve”. Sankofa is often associated with the proverb,"It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” The sankofa bird appears frequently in traditional Akan art, and has also been adopted as an important symbol in an African-American and African Diaspora context to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future. It was indeed a very energising and motivating session. Venus demonstrated the movement, stretches and breathing for relevant yoga asanas and initiated the members into the practice. The techniques Venus shared should be practiced daily ( or at least a few times during the week) for maximum benefit - to take our power back, to be more open and communicative, to start reversing what ails us physically and emotionally.

Miyawaki
Phulkari- Women of Jalandhar, in collaboration with EcoSikh Foundation, Ludhiana, carried out a Miyawaki Forest Plantation Drive under their Guru Nanak Sacred Forest project, in Khambra, Jalandhar. Miyawaki forests are emerging as a popular solution to restoring degraded habitats in the country. This concept was first introduced by Akira Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist and expert in plant ecology. The Miyawaki technique of building forests works on the premise of regenerating the indigenous flora into a self-sustainable forest within 20-30 years by promoting natural vegetation on land destroyed by natural calamities and human-made mistakes. These man-made forests act as natural carbon sinks that help in soil conservation, replenishment of the water table, conservation of pollinators and prevention of soil erosion. This event took place on 14th November’21 and was attended by the Executive Committee of the newly launched Phulkari WOJ.
